Blogcast by Adarsh: My views on the provoking social issues

Shifting the legal marriage age for women to 21 years.

Hello viewers, I am Adarsh Ragesh and this is my first ever blog and I’m trying to keep it really simple. For a head start to my Blogcast series admired by podcasts but not in a taped format, which basically will be my views on the provoking social issues prevailing in the country. So, the topic for the day is ‘Shifting the legal marriage age for women to 21 years. The minimum age of marriage for women was revised from 18 to 21 years in a proposal passed by the cabinet. It was suggested that doing so would increase Women's Empowerment. MWCD (Ministry of Women and Child Developmen
t) formed a task force headed by Jaya Jaitly. She said that the reason behind increasing the minimum age for marriage the agenda wasn't population control. They claimed that it was to tackle the issues related to motherhood. For this bill they took feedback from 16 universities talked to 15 Non-Profitable Organizations, and then it was decided to raise the age for marriage. I feel that marrying off at a young age increases the chances of death during childbirth. But some politicians are criticizing this saying that there is a need for societal change and legislative interference wouldn't make any difference and the govt. spends a lot on just the women empowerment advertisements. But here two unrelated things are being compared. I agree that the Government should not spend this much on ads, but these arguments do not have anything to do with the decision. It is also mentioned in the article that task force on whose recommendation this Bill has been introduced, has put up more recommendations for bringing about societal change. Relating to increasing the accessibility for women in schools and colleges.
Presently, 23% of all marriages are child marriages. Therefore, I believe that law formed that if any child below the age of 18 is married, then that particular marriage should not be considered as legal be legal under any circumstance. A child is not someone who is to be handed over to others at such a young age when they should be going to school and making a good future for themselves. If something of this sort takes place the child’s parents should be put behind the bars. When a child marriage takes place, the parents of both the children giving consent, presence and actively participating in the event should be punished behind the bars. A lot of girls are getting married off at such a young age. The cases being registered regarding this is only a handful. And the cases that are being registered are the cases where the couple had eloped. Such a misery!
Raising the marriage age to 21 years according to me was a good decision by the Modi government. Because it is fundamentally against child marriages. As the age limit has been raised, this should educate people to get married at that age limit. If this law does not get implemented properly it would be a huge failure for the government. If a decision regarding child marriage is not taken up considering it legal, this bill would not make that big of a difference. As the existing law relating to it says that child marriages are still not punishable but are penalized. In this case, there would be no use in implementing such a decision.
Imagine if an 18-year-old couple marries each other. This would impact on their carrier a lot. They would've just passed 12th grade and would be unemployed with no means of income. In such circumstances, if a girl has a child there would be no money to raise the child. This affects the newborn as well. I think that it is not a human right to get married at the age of 18. It is not a crime falling in love or being committed with someone. There are no restrictions at all living in with your loved one, it is just that a particular age limit of 21 years has been set by the government, just to be on a safer side so that the people achieve something in their careers with a proper source of income so that they can get married and have children only after that.
